2012 Project - For this year’s celebration, Annmarie invited the Peaceweavers - Slim Harrison and Brynda Ambush Harrison - for a lively interactive musical performance and creative art program. 204 guests, of all ages and walks of life, enjoyed creating a joyful noise with musician Slim Harrison. Slim’s interactive performance included a variety of whacky and entertaining instruments that guests were invited to play. Guests also worked with artist, Brynda Ambush Harrison, to create a giant woven peace wheel. Brynda provided a colorful selection of fabric from which to choose, as well as an assortment of doodads to weave into each braid. Brynda then helped each guest to add their braid to the large Peace Wheel. After three days of weaving, the Peace Wheel had grown to over four feet in diameter. Many of the guests signed their names on the hoop frame of the wheel. The peace wheel will remain on display in the Main Gallery at Annmarie for the next several months.
MLK Days is made possible thanks to the generous support of SMECO, The National Endowment for the Arts, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the Arts Council of Calvert County.
About the Peaceweavers - Slim & Brynda travel around the world to teach children and others how to visualize and work towards peace locally and globally. Open your senses & awaken your soul as you sing along with songs of peace and freedom. Motivating you to clap your hands, tap your toes, snap your fingers, and sing along with the rhythm and beat of songs from around the world. You may also join in the fun by joining the Sunnyland Peace Band. Members of the audience will be invited up on stage to help tell stories and sing songs or play along on various world rhythm instruments.
2011 Project --- Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by helping to create a community art project inspired by West African textile art. Artist Caryl Henry Alexander will guide visitors through a printing technique inspired by textile printing from the Adrinka culture of West Africa. Visitors will contribute to an ever-growing "tree" in the gallery and then make a print to take home as a keepsake. The final product will remain on display through February 28.
Visitors to MLK Days will also enjoy CELEBRATE!, a mixed media exhibit in honor of African American History Month, featuring the work of Southern Maryland artists Doug Reynolds, Dona Baker, Elaine Wallace, and Stephanie Garrison. This exhibit will be on display through February 28.
