About The New Arts Building
Designed by Wheeler Goodman Masek, Architecture and Interiors, the new 15,000 sq. ft. Arts Building, was completed in April of 2008. The new heart of Annmarie Garden will serve as a place for new exhibitions, special events, and programs, all geared toward making art and nature accessible and fun for everyone.
Not your typical arts center, Annmarie Garden has long been known for its unique family-friendly programs and events and this tradition will continue with the new Arts Building. Featuring exciting and engaging exhibits, the new Arts Building will feature regionally and nationally developed and advertised shows. Every exhibit will include carefully crafted programs and events to compliment the exhibit and provide opportunities for visitors to interact and better understand the art.
The building’s unique and flexible floor plan will allow a broad range of uses, including exhibits, special events, children and family programs, art classes and social gatherings. With a full catering kitchen, café and gift shop, the building will also be a great place for the community to gather for social occasions. The goal is to create a lively environment for creativity and fun.
The Arts Building's Unique Design
The new 15,000 sq. ft. Arts Building at Annmarie Garden was designed by Richard Kleponis, architect with the Annapolis firm of Wheeler Goodman Masek & Associates. Kleponis’ aim was to provide a flexible floor plan with as much exhibit space as possible. To achieve this he created what at first glance appears to be a simple rectangular building, but with a second look the simple structure reveals a few surprises. With a boat-shaped second floor, including glass enclosed bow and stern that protrude at each end of the building, a simple building design has been transformed into something special. The sleek gray and bright red exterior hides a beautiful interior of high ceilings and lovely floors. Large windows let in filtered light and allow someone inside to enjoy all the sculpture displayed outside around the building. With the many trees that surround the building, the new Arts Building at Annmarie Garden is the perfect space for exhibits, artful programs and events, social gatherings, and private parties - both inside and outside.
